Scholarships for mortuary science students attending a New England mortuary college are now available from the non-profit Phaneuf Family Foundation.
“I am excited to support the next generation of funeral directors,” said Arthur O. “Buddy” Phaneuf, President of the Cremation Society of New Hampshire. Phaneuf also serves as a trustee and Chairman of the Board of the foundation. “I’m looking forward to hearing from students who are pursuing a career helping families through the end-of-life process.”
Phaneuf Family Foundation offers $1,000 scholarships for mortuary science students who are currently accepted at or attending mortuary college. Students may apply at any time, and scholarships are awarded in December each year, sent directly to the school.
Applicants:
- Must be currently enrolled in an accredited mortuary program in the United States.
- Must be a resident of New Hampshire or Vermont.
- May be enrolled full- or part-time in school.
- Must submit the application online only through the website.
The application includes questions to be answered on problem-solving and morality. A student may only be awarded one scholarship and may not reapply for future scholarships. The foundation encourages new applicants or those that have applied in the past and did not receive a scholarship to reapply.
Phaneuf Family Foundation formed in 2019. In addition to the scholarships, the foundation’s mission includes helping residents pay for a funeral, and assisting local caregiver organizations.
The foundation was founded primarily to provide financial assistance for funeral or cremation arrangements for New Hampshire and Vermont families that cannot afford to finalize a service. Many cities and towns provide a limited amount of financial assistance to families who cannot afford the total cost of a cremation or funeral service through their welfare departments. However, the financial assistance provided may not cover the least expensive service.
“There is a need to help families who don’t have enough to pay for a dignified farewell,” Buddy Phaneuf added.
Phaneuf has been associated with many professional caregiver organizations in New England for decades. The foundation offers additional monetary resources to the caregivers and hospice employees who provide support to those at their greatest time of need.
